ELLSO

ELLSO is a teaching string orchestra for adult late starters (18+). We want to encourage you to play music, so if you already play a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello or double bass) or would like to learn (even as a complete beginner), we could be the orchestra you’re looking for - you don’t need to audition. We play music that is fun, stimulating, expressive and playable by a wide range of abilities. Some members have never played a stringed instrument before, some can’t read music, whilst others have previous musical knowledge and expertise.

'Such an incredible atmosphere'

Started over 25 years ago, ELLSO has a basic philosophy - that music-making is within everyone’s ability. This philosophy is reflected in our approach, our teaching methods and the music we play. We provide a genuinely supportive and non-competitive environment allowing even complete beginners to join in orchestral playing from day one.

'This has been a life-changing experience'

There’s no experience quite like playing music with other like-minded people; it’s a very special feeling. The ethos of ELLSO is that it’s never too late to learn music and take part in this liberating and fun experience.

'You know, you really ought to try it' The Times Saturday Magazine

ELLSO is something special. Come and join us.
