Saturday mornings

This is the core of  all ELLSO’s activities. Led by experienced tutors, the unique Saturday morning Learning Programme (from 9.30am to 1.30pm) comprises four sessions - one dedicated to developing technique, another to acquiring essential musicianship skills and two to playing in ensembles. You’ll be playing in ensembles right from day one and you can also take part in the three end of term concerts to show off what  you’ve achieved.

Depending on your technical ability, you will be in one of five stages (Stage 1 for beginners, up to more experienced players in Stage 5).  For stages 1 to 4 you’re expected to appraise yourself, in conjunction with your tutor’s advice. Entry to stage 5 is determined by tutor agreement. This is designed to cover the needs of all players - from absolute beginners, to those players with considerable instrumental experience who wish to develop interpretive skills and tackle established string repertoire. We want to ensure that you’re in the appropriate stage relative to your experience and skills.

We meet from 9.30am to 1.30pm at the  Phoenix Primary and Secondary School, 49 Bow Road, Bow, London, E3 2AD. (Between Mile End and Bow Road tube stations).  There is very limited parking on site but parking is free in nearby side roads. For a map and details of how to get there. View Map

The end of term concerts allow members to show off what they’ve learnt. At the end of year concert in July we include the very popular ‘Have a Go’ session, where guests can try out an instrument and join in a specially arranged composition. See Free concerts for dates and details.
