ELLSO String Summer School 2017

Making music

With such a wide-ranging programme of music-making for violin, viola, cello and double bass, you will be able to extend your abilities and repertoire whatever your level of experience.

  • Activities are matched to your expertise and include:
  • Core programme of orchestral sessions
  • Technique coaching for all stringed instruments
  • Wide range of string music, from baroque and classical to romantic and modern
  • Options to choose from such as chamber music sessions, traditional folk  music, contemporary music, singing, painting, yoga/pilates, talks and taster sessions
  • Evening concerts in the intimate atmosphere of the on-site church of St James

Music will be sent out in advance of the course and you will be able to create your own daily programme from the choices on offer. 


Our course tutors all have active professional careers and are amongst the best in the UK. They have extensive experience of working with, inspiring and building the confidence of adult players, learners and late starters.

Daily programme


There will be an option to stay at High Melton for pre-course B&B accommodation on Saturday 23rd July, but the course itself begins with Sunday lunch served from 12.30 pm on 24th July. Music activities start immediately after a brief introduction at 2pm.

Breakfast is served daily from 8am. Music-making starts at 9am with a warm-up. Technique classes, orchestral and ensemble music sessions and other options then follow throughout the day, with breaks for tea/coffee and lunch.  

There are optional music activities and concerts in the evenings and the bar generally opens at around 6.30pm, serving until midnight.

Practice rooms are open from 7am until 11pm each day, and the course ends after breakfast on Saturday 30th July 


Fees cover all tuition provided by ELLSO and use of facilities provided by Doncaster College. There is a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from £400 for self-catering campers to £775 for full board ensuite accommodation in Old Hall.

We can offer a limited number of concessionary places available on a first-come, first-served basis to players who are on certain benefits or who are experiencing severe financial difficulty. 

Book early!

The Summer School is usually oversubscribed and early booking will be essential to guarantee a place. This is especially so for cello players and also for those wanting ensuite rooms in Old Hall. 
If we are unable to offer you a place when you apply, we will put you on the waiting list (unless you request otherwise).

Applicants will be asked to pay a non-returnable deposit of £85, with outstanding balance due by mid-June 2017.
