Katy studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Graham Mitchell and Duncan McTier. Following graduation in 2011, Katy received training with the London Philharmonic Orchestra after winning a place on the Foyle Future Firsts graduate scheme, on tour with the European Union Youth Orchestra and with the London Sinfonietta Academy.
Professionally Katy is a freelance double bassist, working with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Opera, English National Ballet, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, London Sinfonietta, and with Nigel Kennedy’s Orchestra of Life as well as playing on numerous film scores. Katy is the double bassist for the Bottesini Ensemble, a group that specializes in chamber music that involves the double bass, and she has also enjoyed performing chamber music with The Barbican Ensemble, The Rosemary Consort, and the Arnold Camerata.
Education work is important to Katy and she enjoys the variety that it presents. She teaches the double bass at Tonbridge School and at Coloma Convent Girl’s School and she is a licensed teacher for Bromley Youth Music Trust as well as a deputy teacher for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama junior department. Katy has coached young musicians on orchestral music with the Bromley Youth Symphony Orchestra, West Sussex County Youth Orchestra, Kings College School Wimbledon and the Marryat Players and she has worked on several varying outreach projects with the education department of the London Philharmonic Orchestra as well as with Ignite at the Wigmore Hall. Katy regularly works with the Kidenza orchestra and the Multi-Story Orchestra which both deliver educational and community driven performances.
